Why does my gas fireplace smell when I turn it on? +
A brief dust-burn smell when lighting a fireplace that's been off all summer is normal and usually clears in a few minutes. A persistent gas smell is a different situation entirely and means you should turn the unit off, ventilate the room, and call us at (952) 847-3387 before using it again. We'll inspect the gas valve, supply fittings, and burner assembly to find the source. Don't assume it will clear on its own.
Can you repair gas fireplaces from any brand? +
We repair and maintain major brands of existing gas fireplaces, including older models, inserts, and freestanding gas heating stoves, including gas potbelly stoves, across Wright, McLeod, Hennepin, and Carver County. These are units that heat rooms. We don't repair kitchen appliances, including ovens, cooking stoves, ranges, or cooktops. We don't service wood-burning fireplaces or vent-free (unvented) units, and we don't install new fireplaces. Most repair work involves components that are either universal or sourced through the manufacturer's parts network. We'll tell you upfront if a specific part has a long lead time or if the fireplace brand has known issues with a particular component.
My pilot light won't stay lit. Is that a thermocouple problem? +
Usually, yes. A thermocouple that's dirty, out of position, or failed won't generate enough voltage to keep the gas valve open, so the pilot drops out every time you release the button. It's one of the more common gas fireplace repairs we do across the West Metro. We clean or replace the thermocouple and test the igniter in the same visit. The part itself is inexpensive — the labor to diagnose and replace it is the main cost.
What does a full gas fireplace cleaning include? +
Our cleaning service covers the burner ports, log set, glass panel, and pilot assembly. We also inspect the venting for blockages or damage, test the thermocouple and gas valve, and check that the blower motor is operating correctly if your unit has one. The goal is to leave the fireplace running at the efficiency and safety level it was designed for. Most cleaning visits take one to two hours depending on how long it's been since the last service.
Do you offer emergency gas fireplace repair in the West Metro? +
If you smell gas near your fireplace, that's a safety situation, not a repair call: leave the house, don't operate any switches, and contact your gas utility or 911 from a safe location right away.
